This is a statement on behalf of the SHOT Steering Group and Working Expert Group members.
The Infected Blood Inquiry chaired by Sir Brian Langstaff has published a comprehensive report that details the circumstances which led to the tragic deaths and the continued suffering of so many patients and families.
We are all profoundly saddened to hear accounts in the Infected Blood Inquiry report. Our deepest sympathies are with the Infected and the Affected for the many wrongdoings which have occurred in the past and the prolonged delay in getting acknowledgement. SHOT recognises that while the report has been published, it by no means is the end of the suffering which is ongoing. We welcome the report and recommended actions to improve patient safety with greater transparency surrounding blood transfusion and haemovigilance.
It is encouraging to see many recommendations supporting haemovigilance, patient blood management, transfusion education, laboratory support and digital transformation within transfusion. Many of the recommendations align closely with the current philosophy of SHOT, and the priorities we have identified over recent years.
Haemovigilance aims to improve transfusion safety through monitoring of adverse events including near misses, reactions related to blood transfusions, and through learning from excellence. Patient safety remains the guiding principle for all haemovigilance activities.
We would like to thank haemovigilance reporters who continue to advocate for patient safety through their vigilant reporting and investigation of transfusion adverse events and wish to continue to partner with reporters and patients to further strengthen transfusion safety throughout the UK.
SHOT needs to take some time to consider the findings and recommendations from this comprehensive report. We are committed to work with MHRA as the regulator and other stakeholders including patients on facilitating implementation of the recommendations to enhance safety.
As part of the initial actions, a detailed reflection will be included in the 2023 Annual SHOT Report which will be released on Tuesday 09 July. Let us work together to create a culture where safety is not just a priority but an unshakeable foundation for all practices.
