The SCRIPT group has published the Essential standards for safe transfusion in clinical IT systems (Version 1.0, June 2026), developed to support safer, more reliable transfusion practice across the UK.

These standards define the mandatory (“must”) safety requirements for IT systems supporting safety critical transfusion workflows, including patient identification, sample labelling, ordering and administration of blood components, and the management of transfusion reactions.

Applicable to Electronic Patient Records (EPR), Electronic Blood Management Systems (EBMS), and wider clinical digital infrastructure, the standards are intended to:
- Support system suppliers in designing safe, interoperable solutions
- Guide healthcare organisations in procurement and configuration of systems
- Enable hospital transfusion teams to assess compliance and strengthen governance
These standards establish a baseline for safety-critical functionality, helping organisations reduce risk, improve traceability, and embed best practice across transfusion pathways.
Developed through extensive collaboration with experts, stakeholders, and national transfusion committees, this work reflects a shared commitment to improving patient safety through robust digital systems.
