Definition:
Paediatric reports are subdivided by recipient age group: neonates ≤28 days; infants >28 days and <1 year; children ≥1 year to <16 years and young people aged 16 to <18 years.
SHOT has included a separate chapter containing paediatric reports since 2007. In this first report, children under 16 years old were included. However this was expanded in 2008 to include an additional age group of 16 and 17 year olds.
SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards
The SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards were released in July 2025, and these replace recommendations in the Annual SHOT Reports. More details on these can be found at: https://www.shotuk.org/transfusion-safety/transfusion-safety-standards/
Recommendations from recent Annual SHOT Reports (prior to 2024)
Laboratories should have clear policies for rapid, concessionary release of blood components, including roles/responsibilities
Neonatal/infant specification emergency components should be clearly distinguished from adult components when stored together in satellite refrigerators, with staff training on correct selection in emergency
Management of paediatric FAHR should be timely and appropriate
Action: Hospital transfusion teams
Please see the individual SHOT chapters at the end of the page for other previous recommendations which remain relevant.
