Click here to access the Essential standards for safe transfusion in clinical IT systemsThe standards set out clear, mandatory requirements for IT systems used in safety‑critical transfusion workflows, including patient identification, sample labelling, ordering, administration, and management of transfusion events.

Designed for system suppliers, healthcare organisations, and transfusion teams, the standards provide a practical framework to support safe system design, procurement, implementation, and ongoing assurance.
They emphasise:
- Robust patient identification and barcode scanning
- Interoperability between systems
- Clear audit trails and traceability
- Decision support aligned with national guidelines
- Strong governance and safety controls within digital workflows
This work has been endorsed by the four UK national transfusion committees and developed collaboratively with subject matter experts, stakeholders, and partners across the UK transfusion community.
